Come see how the world could be. The acclaimed musical Hadestown returns to Portland's Keller Auditorium for a limited engagement January 26-31, 2027. Winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards including Best Musical, this haunting and hopeful theatrical experience from celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin is a love story for today… and always.
Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell's beguiling melodies and Chavkin's poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.
This Portland engagement features eight performances:

Hadestown began as a Vermont community theater project created by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell in 2006. It evolved into a concept album in 2010, then Mitchell partnered with director Rachel Chavkin to reimagine it for the stage. The theatrical production premiered at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016, followed by runs in Edmonton and London's National Theatre before opening on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17, 2019.
At the 73rd Tony Awards, Hadestown received 14 nominations—the most of any show that year—and won eight awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations. The original Broadway cast recording also won the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Set in a Depression-era industrial underworld, Hadestown reimagines the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice through a modern lens of economic hardship and climate anxiety. Orpheus, a young dreamer and musician, falls in love with the practical, hungry Eurydice. When hard times come and Eurydice follows the promise of security to Hadestown—King Hades' underground industrial empire—Orpheus must journey to the underworld to bring her back.
Paralleling their story is the fractured marriage of Hades and Persephone, goddess of spring. Their relationship reflects the seasons themselves: Persephone spends half the year above ground, bringing warmth and life, then descends to Hadestown where Hades has grown cold and controlling. Through music, the lovers find a way to mend what's broken—if they can trust each other enough to see it through.

The score blends folk, jazz, blues, and New Orleans-style music with choral arrangements. Mitchell's songwriting has roots in American folk traditions, and the orchestrations evoke a smoky, timeless atmosphere.
